Following the story of how a young orphan boy becomes the legendary Peter Pan, this production allowed for many collaborative and immersive opportunities. The original stagecraft of this play with music was designed for the audience to visually see the band make the sound effects in the show, however we decided to hide the band causing a change in how these sound effects would be perceived. In collaboration with the director and music director, we workshopped certain moments to see what made sense to still come from the band, what read better prerecorded, as well as what sounded best layered together. Most of the magic twinkling sounds were left to be made by the band as that gave it the best intended mystical quality, but moments such as the magic grotto was decided to be layered with prerecorded sounds, like rippling water, in order to give the scene more depth and dimension.
To add to the storytelling of the drastic change in locations between act 1 and act 2, the system was designed with the thought to match these changes through soundscapes. Act 1 (being set on a dark, cramped ship) was programmed for all sounds to only come from the main front system. The back of house speakers were used later in the show to create a more immersive surround sound experience as we moved to the bright, open island in Act 2.
